Supports Fetal Brain
& Cognitive Development

L-Methyl Folate, in synergy with an optimal dose of Vitamin B12, Vitamin D3, Zinc, Veg Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA & EPA) & Iodine, contributes to the development of the fetal brain & cognitive functions by supporting neural tube formation, neurogenesis and synaptic connectivity.

Brain
Supports Fetal Brain
& Organ Maturation

Message from the Chairperson of UCAN Programme

The Menace of Hidden Hunger

1 in 2 pregnant women in India suffer from hidden hunger The diets of both urban & rural women in India are often carbohydrate-rich but lack essential micronutrients. Studies reveal that one in every two pregnant women has deficiencies in 7-8 key micronutrients.[5-71] These deficiencies contribute to approximately 60% of adverse pregnancy outcomes.[8]

Estimated prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in pregnant women.[1,9]

Increased Risks Associated with Micronutrient Deficiency:

  • Preterm delivery & low-birth weight.
  • Neurological & cognitive deficits in the fetus.
  • Congenital anomalies.
  • Cardiovascular diseases & insulin resistance.
  • Thyroid dysfunction.
  • Postpartum depression

Challenges in Maternal Health in India

Comparison of Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes:

  • PTD (%)
  • LBW (%)
  • IUGR (%)
  • PE (%)
  • GDM (%)

India has significantly higher rates of adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as Preterm Delivery (PTD), Low Birth Weight (LBW), Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR), Pre-Eclampsia (PE), & Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), compared to developed nations.

For over two decades, developed countries have been prescribing Multi-Micronutrient (MMN) supplementation along with fortified foods to pregnant women.[10-17] The data emphasize the urgent need for India to transition from the traditional Iron, Folate & Calcium (IFC) supplementation model to an advanced MMN-based approach for improving pregnancy outcomes.

Importance of the ‘First 1000 Days’

The First 1000 Days—from conception to a child's second birthday—represent a critical window for establishing lifelong health. Adequate nutrition during this period supports fetal development, strengthens immunity, & enhances cognitive outcomes, significantly impacting future health & well-being.

The first 300 days (from conception to birth) are particularly pivotal. Gynecologists play a crucial role in shaping maternal & fetal health during this phase. By prescribing tailored Multi-Micronutrient (MMN) supplementation rich in Folate, Veg Omega-3 fatty acids, lodine, Vitamin D, Carotenoids & Antioxidants, healthcare professionals can significantly enhance pregnancy outcomes & provide the foundation for a healthy start to the next generation.

How MMN Supplementation Improves Pregnancy Outcomes[18-21]

Fetal Benefits:

  • Reduced risk of preterm birth by 55%.
  • Decreased risk of low birth weight by 15%.
  • Improved body composition, growth, respiratory health, & cognitive outcomes.
  • Lower risk of non-communicable diseases in adulthood, such as diabetes & cardiovascular disorders.
Pregnancy Graphic

Maternal Benefits:

  • Reduced risk of pre-eclampsia by 45%.
  • Lower risk of gestational diabetes, osteoporosis, & thyroid dysfunction.
  • Reduced incidence of maternal anemia compared to iron & folate supplementation alone.
  • Enhanced energy levels, improved immunity, & faster postpartum recovery.
